THE MUSIC OF SOPHIE DUNÉR

The music of Sophie Dunér may be described as a blend of the romantic and spiritual with the grotesque. It plays with tense colours resolving into romantinc harmony. This goes for the music as well as the lyrics which are mostly tragicomical.

Coming from jazz, Sophie has evolutioned towards a direction mainly created by herself. You may find a blend of influences such as jazz, contemporary music, theatrical influences and worldmusic.

The lyrics in her music are of great importance, creating colours and rhythms that relates to the story as much as possible. A lot of satire reminding you of the 30s but set in a contemporary arrangement.

With a great deal of satire, she sings about women and men, making fun of their pathetic attempt to relate to one another.

Sometimes, her lyrics may come across as harsch but one has to see it with irony. As in other styles of music, agressivity in lyrics is permitted - only that in jazz music, you may not expect it as much.

Stylistically people have very often found it difficult to put Sophie in a chategory. As todays jazz has evolutioned a lot and styles are crossing over from one to another, you may call it crossover music. Though her intention was never to make a grand mix of many styles - it rather just comes out this way.

Sophie personally relates very much to a variety of composers such as Kurt Weill,Kate Bush, Schoenberg and Frank Zappa.

Sophie has a very visual concept in relation to her music. It is strongly connected to her paintings and as stated earlier, the lyrics are of big importance.
